Pneumonia vaccinations

If you are aged 65 and over, the Department of Health recommends you are vaccinated against serious Pneumococcal disease.

Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae which usually lives harmlessly in the back of many people’s throats. However, it can invade other parts of the body and cause serious, possibly life threatening illnesses, notably;

  • pneumonia
  • septicaemia or “blood poisoning”
  • meningitis

Pneumococcal vaccination can help prevent disease and is available to all those over 65 years of age, and of any age if you have;

  • Chronic heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic liver disease
  • A weak immune system
  • An absent or poor functioning spleen

If any of the above apply to you, please contact the surgery on   01787 475944   to makeyour pneumo appointment. Please speak to our nurses if you have any questions about this vaccine.

We hold a supply of Pneumovax throughout the year.
